Sleep easy to raise awareness for homeless

Coventry Editorial 5th Jan, 2016 Updated: 28th Oct, 2016   0

YMCA COVENTRY and Warwickshire is calling on local people to take part in their annual Sleep Easy fundraising event to raise awareness of rough sleeping.

The event, which will take place on Friday (March 18) from 7pm to 7am, invites participants to brave the cold for one night and sleep in a cardboard box under the canopy at Coventry Cathedral.

Those taking part are asked to pay an entry fee of £25 and encouraged to raise money through sponsorship.

YMCA Coventry and Warwickshire – which provides accommodation for 73 otherwise homeless young people – supports people in the area through a range of sports programmes, training and youth clubs.

Andy Winter, YMCA Coventry and Warwickshire chief executive, said: “Sleep Easy is a great way of getting members of our community to raise money for young homeless people.

“We urge everyone to get involved and take part in the event – not only for YMCA, but for personal awareness on this sensitive issue.

“It can be an eye opening experience for many people who take part.

“We sleep rough for one night so many young people can sleep safe for another.”

Last year, more than 30 people took part in Sleep Easy in Coventry – raising almost £5,000 in one night.

Participants will be provided with warm food, drinks, and plenty of cardboard to make a bed to ensure everyone is kept safe, warm and in good spirits.
