THE NAME of a soldier who was killed in action during the First World War has been added to the Berkswell war memorial.
Corporal Walter William Timms enlisted to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in Coventry shortly after war was declared in 1914 and died in Troyon on September 29.
When fundraising began to restore the roof of the Berkswell war memorial, a project that is expected to cost around £50,000, it became apparent Cpl Timms had been left off.
Fundraisers say it is unclear why his name was never added to the list of the fallen but it is never too late to correct mistakes and his name has been added ahead of Armistice Day, November 11, by mason Jim Pollard.
Cpl Timms’ nephew, Fred Timms, still lives in Berkswell.
At the Berkswell memorial there are 39 names of the fallen from the First World War and 10 from the Second World War.
The restoration project is a project lead by the Berkswell Society, St John Baptist Church, Berkswell Charities and Berkswell Parish Council.
The memorial is, like many such structures, not owned by anyone – it sits on church land but was paid for by public subscription organised by an adhoc committee of local residents and was designed by Sir Charles Nicholson and was dedicated in 1920.
To date over £7,000 has been raised from the community and a grant of £25,970 has been offered by the HS2 Community Fund.
