A 19-year-old man from Solihull will appear before Westminster Magistrates today (February 14) charged with a terrorism offence.

Samuel Newey was arrested last Friday (February 7) and charged yesterday.

Police said: “He is charged as follows:

“Between 1 November and 7 November 2019, within the jurisdiction of the Central Criminal Court, Samuel Thomas Francis Newey, with the intention of assisting Daniel Newey to commit, prepare or instigate an act of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention. Contrary to Section 5(1)(b) Terrorism Act 2006.”

He will appear alongside 49-year-old Paul Newey who is charged with funding terrorism.

It is alleged he sent money to his son Samuel while he was in Syria allegedly fighting with Kurdish militia against ISIS.

The police added: “Every year thousands of reports from the public help police tackle the terrorist threat. If you see or hear something that doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and ACT by reporting to police in confidence at gov.uk/ACT.

“Reporting won’t ruin lives, but it could save them. Action Counters Terrorism. Remember, in an emergency, always dial 999.”
