Speed cameras installed along Tamworth Road after 13 personal injury collisions in three years

AVERAGE Speed Cameras have been installed on lamp columns along Tamworth Road to clamp down on speeding drivers in the area.

This is part of the next Average Speed Enforcement programme on the main city routes, with cameras installed by the City Council and supported by West Midlands Police.

Over three years, there have been 13 personal injury collisions recorded on Tamworth Road, including one death and two serious injuries.

The new cameras installed will cover the stretch of road from Tamworth Roads junction with Radford Road to the city boundary.

Signs will inform drivers they’re entering an average speed control zone, with income for those paying for speed awareness courses used to cover police costs and to potentially extend the scheme.

Average speed cameras record a car’s registration before calculating how fast they’re going and can cover a longer stretch of road compared to other cameras.

West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster went to visit Tamworth Road to check the cameras before they went live.

Coun Patricia Hetherton, Cabinet Member for City Services, said: “We have been running initial checks on the equipment and have been letting motorists know that the cameras will soon be live.

“Although West Midlands Police will be enforcing the limits we hope that the fact the cameras are in place will be a warning to drivers.

“Most people respect speed limits, but there have been examples were irresponsible motorists have ignored these limits resulting in avoidable collisions that have affected many people.”
