A RECORD breaking number of participants took part in this year’s annual Coventry Triathlon – and among them was Observer pair Steve Carpenter and Wayne Lovelock.
After previously taking part in two half marathons, this was their first triathlon in which they were raising funds for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice.
Over 200 people did a 400 metre swim in the Excel Centre pool in Canley before a 20km bike ride and 5km run along local footpaths.
The winner was Phil Wolfe and the first woman was Charlotte Taylor of Warwick University Triathlon Club/Mike Vaughan Cycles in sixth overall.
“It was such a great event.” said sales director Wayne, who beat Steve in the pool and on the bike.
“I would recommend the Coventry Triathlon event to anyone interested in progressing from running. There was a great atmosphere on the day and all the marshals were very friendly and gave everyone lots of support. I will be joining Coventry Triathlon club.”
Steve said there was a a great sense of self satisfaction when he crossed the finish line.
He added: “It was without doubt one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but it was certainly very enjoyable. I’m already looking for taking part next year.”
The pair would like to thank Halfords for kindly donating two bikes for the triathlon and for those who have supported the fund-raising campaign, particularly the Coventry Round Table.
