A SYRIAN refugee who fled to Coventry three years ago has helped a group of 29 youngsters follow in his footsteps to start new lives in the city through Positive Youth Foundation (PYF)’s Boost programme.
Dalshier Othman fled the war in Syria and arrived in the UK through the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme at the end of 2019.
The 22-year-old took part in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) service offered by PYF to help him integrate into the city.
Dalshier is now a Youth Engagement Officer for PYF and has helped the youngsters tackle the challenges he faced through the Boost programme.
Funded through Coventry City Council’s migration team, the programme features a 10-week intensive ESOL course along with breakfast and lunch in a dedicated learning space.
Those enrolled on the programme also take part in school visits, functional skills including numeracy and computer use, and enrichment activities.
The Boost programme was created after PYF found newly arrived young people have a significantly lower chance of integrating into the education system, affecting academic performance, employment opportunities and mental well-being.
Dalshier said: “The thing I enjoyed most while supporting the programme is that it reminded me of when I came to the UK.
“As a newly arrived young person and a student, I can say there is a big difference in young people who are isolated and are not able to practise talking or listening in English.
“The young people were able to practise English every day, and they have all made a lot of progress through the 10 weeks.”
Obayed Hussain, Programmes Manager at PYF added: “Arriving in any new country represents a massive opportunity for people, but there are so many challenges to overcome and it is inspiring to see Dalshier supporting those who face the same obstacles as he has over the last few years.”
