Take history trail for Coventry's Heritage Open Days

Coventry Editorial 9th Sep, 2023   0

WITH Heritage Open Days now under way, Coventrians will be able to follow a new walking map celebrating the city’s history.

Visit Coventry has created a new trail guiding visitors through some of Coventry’s most notable historical and heritage sites.

Heritage Open Days, which lasted until Sunday, September 17, saw historical gems across Coventry open their doors and provide free access.

All the attractions will be free to enter during the Heritage Open Days including Charterhouse, London Road Cemetery and St Mary’s Guildhall.

The map is available from tourist information hubs in the city, with an interactive walking guide also available from Visit Coventry’s website.

It starts at Charterhouse before taking visitors on a short walk to Coventry city centre through London Road Cemetery: Paxton’s Arboretum and into the city centre.

The 14th-century St Mary’s Guildhall, one of the city’s only remaining medieval buildings, is next on the list, followed by the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.

The trail then takes visitors across the courtyard to Coventry Cathedral before ending at the city’s transport museum.

Finally, the trail comes to a close at Coventry Transport Museum, giving visitors the chance to find out about the cycling and automotive history of Coventry.

Visit Coventry is also urging people following the trail to seek out the lesser-known historical gems in the city streets while moving from attraction to attraction.

Visit Coventry managing director Paul Jones said Heritage Open Days are a fantastic opportunity to showcase the incredible history and heritage of Coventry to residents and people visiting the city.
