A TEENAGER from Coventry has been arrested alongside two others on suspicion of firearms offences after a handgun was found by police hidden in a car in Birmingham city centre this morning.

A member of the public pointed out the trio, who they believed were acting suspiciously, to officers patrolling the city’s nightlife hub at around 1am.

But as they approached their vehicle, which was parked at the Bishopsgate Street junction, all three bolted and ran off.

The 16-year-old passenger from Coventry and 18-year-old driver, from Birmingham were arrested after a brief foot-chase, whilst a 17-year-old from Lozells was arrested at gunpoint from a taxi he’d hailed in an attempt to flee the scene.

Chief Inspector Jack Hadley, said: “Two were arrested a short distance away but the third managed to run towards Tesco at Five Ways where he laid low in gardens for a few minutes.

“That gave us time to get armed police to the scene and when he broke cover and jumped in a taxi, firearms officers swiftly moved in to stop the cab in Ladywood Middleway.

“It was a dynamic arrest but one that saw all three suspects arrested inside 15 minutes. I’d like to thank the astute person who pointed out the men – it was a hunch that proved accurate as we recovered a handgun hidden in a bag under the driver’s seat.”

The vehicle and firearm have both been seized for forensics analysis; all three teenagers are in police custody and will be questioned by detectives today.
