COVENTRY’S faith has shone brightly as the city paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II over the past week.

Books of Condolence have been available at Coventry Cathedral, while at Holy Trinity Church people have been able to write their messages of thanks to the Queen.

Both the Cathedral and Holy Trinity have given visitors a chance to light a candle.

Touching floral tributes have been placed at the Cathedral Ruins in front of a photograph of the Queen.

One message read: “Paddington said there are some great marmalade sandwiches in heaven” in reference to the Queen’s much-loved Platinum Jubilee video.

Others said the Queen had ‘made all of our lives a little bit brighter’ and ‘rest in peace your majesty, you served our country well’.

A prayer of service of Prayer and Thanksgiving was held last Friday, and a short service took place following the Accession Proclamation reading on Sunday.

A Civic Service of Thanksgiving to the Queen will be held at 4pm this Sunday in Coventry Cathedral which everyone is welcome to attend.

Holy Trinity Church has also been holding tributes to the late Queen, with short spoken services on Saturday and Wednesday.

At 5pm on Sunday, September 18, Holy Trinity will hold a special choral commemorative service.

As head of the Church of England, the Queen frequently expressed the deep importance she placed on her faith.

She laid the foundation stone at the Cathedral on March 23, 1956, before returning for the consecration service on May 25, 1962.

The Queen was on the throne throughout the new Cathedral’s entire history, marking her Platinum Jubilee only a few days after it celebrated its Diamond anniversary.

Dean of Coventry Cathedral, the Very Rev John Witcombe said the Queen had ‘inspired us, and led us faithfully in our national life’.

“We give thanks for the life and reign of our beloved Sovereign.

“We share in Coventry Cathedral with so many in our country in feeling a special closeness with our Queen.

“Queen Elizabeth has shared her life and faith with us throughout her reign.

“She has wept with us and rejoiced with us.

“She, like us, has known challenges in her personal and public life, and we have been privileged to share those times with her in an age which has seen an explosion of access to the life of our monarch through the media and now modern technology.

“May she rest in peace and rise in glory.”
