THE SEARCH has begun for Coventry Building Society’s young writer of the year.

Writers aged between seven and 11 are invited to enter the competition which runs across primary schools in the city.

It is open to all children in years three, four, five and six with prizes available to the winners and runners up.

Writers have until November 29 to write a short story that begins with: ‘I came home from school and there was a mystery box at the end of my bed. I couldn’t believe what was inside…’

Every primary school in the city has been invited to take part and winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on March 4 2025 at the CBS Arena.

Becky Welch, senior community specialist at Coventry Building Society, said: “It’s amazing how imaginative young minds can be.

“Last year’s competition really highlighted the talent we have in our local schools, and this is another great opportunity for them to let their imaginations run wild.

“Writing stories is a fantastic way for kids to express themselves and unleash their creativity. This competition is all about nurturing that creativity in a really fun and engaging way.

“Developing strong writing abilities is a vital life skill, both in and out of the classroom. This activity is one of the many ways we’re supporting local schools in fostering a love for words among children.

“The quality of entries we received last year blew us away, and we’re hoping for even more awesome submissions this time around.

“We’ve given all the writers the same starting point for their stories; what happens next is totally up to them. We can’t wait to start reading their creative entries.”
