The Three Degrees set to role back the years - live in our region

Coventry Editorial 19th Aug, 2017   0

FABULOUS trio The Three Degrees will visit Coventry at the end of this month as one member celebrates half a century with the group.

Fifty years have passed since Valerie Holiday joined the group in 1967, and they will now take to the stage at the Albany Theatre on Saturday, August 26.

Holiday will be joined on stage by Helen Scott and Freddie Pool as they take fans on a trip through the decades and their catalogue of hits.

The Three Degrees have performed in Coventry on numerous occasions and even once used the city centre De Vere Hotel – now the Britannia Hotel – as their tour base.

Formed in Philadelphia in the 1960s, the group hit international fame with chart topper ‘When Will I see You Again’ in 1974.

Known for their glamourous gowns, flawless choreography and soulful voices, they have become one of most renowned and longest running female vocal groups in music history.

Holiday says she knows Coventry well and is looking forward to coming back.

She added: “We use different cities as our base and we used Coventry one year. We had a chance to become familiar with the city, headed out to do some shopping and walk around on our off days.

“The travelling can be hard on tour but for that hour up on stage it’s always fun and makes it all worth it.

“The crowd reaction is even better than when we first started out, you don’t just get the ‘grown-ups’ in the audience now, we get a lot of younger people coming down which really is very nice.”

The group have been particularly successful in the UK, achieving 13 top 50 hit singles, notably becoming a musical favourite of Prince Charles.

“It was very flattering back then to know that Prince Charles loved our music and it’s still very flattering to this day,” added Holiday.

“We always try to give a nice rounded performance, something for everyone, so everybody in audience can have a good evening.”

Doors open on Saturday, August 26, from 7.30pm.
