Three Coventry cycle projects to benefit from £12.6million of funding

THREE Coventry cycle projects are set to benefit from £12.6million of funding from Active Travel England.

Seven Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) projects on walking or cycling routes in Birmingham, Coventry, Walsall and Wolverhampton are set to benefit from the cash.

Cycle safety measures around Coventry city centre will receive £2.3million, while £550,000 will go towards a connection linking the New Century Park development to the Binley Road Cycleway.

And £2.2million will go towards extending the completed Coundon Cycle Route in Coventry to serve the new developments at Keresley.

These projects must start construction by the end of next March.

To launch the region’s fourth Active Travel Fund allocation, Transport Minister Jesse Norman MP visited Coventry’s Binley Cycleway to meet Coventrians and school children benefitting from new cycling infrastructure.

The cycleway was partly funded in the Active Travel funds second round, with around two-thirds of the route now openC to the public.

When completed, the Binley cycleway will link the city centre to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

The new schemes will form part of the Starley network, which pulls together almost 500 miles of existing routes and towpaths, planned cycling infrastructure and safe walking areas.

The route is named in honour of Coventry’s Starley family, who pioneered bicycle manufacturing.
