Tile Hill residents launch petition to limit road speeds to 20mph

Coventry Editorial 30th Apr, 2017   0

A PETITION has been launched by Tile Hill Residents’ Group to limit road speeds in the village to 20mph.

The group will be collecting signatures over the next month asking residents to support the petition which aims to increase road safety in the area.

They are campaigning for all roads in the village to be restricted to 20mph amid fears the area will become more congested with plans to build houses on Westwood Heath Road and Cromwell Lane.

It is also hoped a reduced speed limit would reduce pollution, make the area more peaceful and allow residents currently reluctant to go for a walk because of road safety issues get out again.

Bob Wright, who is leading the petition, said: “There’s more reasons than just safety to reduce the speed limit in Tile Hill village to 20mph.

“We’re aiming for 500 signatures. Before we decided to go ahead with the petition we did a sampling of residents who talked to neighbours and friends. We knew we’d receive support.

“I’m confident we will get the signatures. We have the support of all three ward councillors.”

Construction of HS2 is also of concern to the Residents’ Group, who anticipate a larger number of HGVs travelling through the village when work starts.

The group said: “The Group believes that a 20 mph limit would help pedestrians, especially the elderly, the vulnerable and children to cross roads more safely, save time, improve traffic flow, and improve air quality for all residents.

“A pedestrian is likely to suffer slight injuries if struck by a vehicle travelling at 20mph.

“At 30mph they are likely to be severely hurt, and at 40 mph or above are likely to be killed.”
