Transport Police urging parents to warn children not to go onto railway lines

Coventry Editorial 7th Apr, 2023   0

BRITISH Transport Police is urging parents and carers across the West Midlands to warn their children of the dangers of trespassing on the railway lines, writes Mia Whitehouse.

With the Easter holidays, lighter nights and warmer weather now here, children and young people are sure to be out and about.

Tracks are live 24-hours-a-day and 25,000 volts of electricity can jump from overhead lines, leading to death or life-changing injuries.

Trains travelling up to 125mph also pose further dangers.

Birmingham Inspector Paul Finlayson said children could be tempted to play on the tracks.

“We ask all parents to be mindful of where their children are over the holidays and encourage the discussion on the dangers of the tracks.”

He urged anyone who saw someone trespassing to treat it as an emergency and call 999.

Anyone with concerns can contact BTP via text on 61016 or via British Transport Police’s Railway Guardian App or by calling 0800 405040.

The Railway Guardian app is available to download for android phones from the Play Store and from the Apple Store.
