Tributes paid to beloved professor who died after being hit by car

A HEARTFELT tribute has been paid to a professor who died after he was hit by a car in Coventry.

Professor Harry Matlay, 73, was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the collision in Walsgrave Road at the junction with Grantham Street just before 2pm on Friday January 2.

He died on Wednesday (January 7) morning.

Prof Matlay held posts at Birmingham City Business School, Warwick University Business School and the University of the West of Scotland Business School.




His family have paid tribute to him, saying: “We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of our father, Professor Harry Matlay, following a serious collision on Friday January 2.

“He was greatly loved and admired by many, and his passing is a profound loss.


“He will be deeply missed by his children, family, friends, ex-colleagues and ex-students, around the world. We respectfully request privacy at this time.”

The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene and is assisting officers with enquiries.

Det Sgt Richard Evans, from West Midlands Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are offering support to Prof Matlay’s family at this devastating time as we continue working to establish the exact circumstances of the collision.”
