THE CURATOR of Coventry Music Museum Pete Chambers BEM has paid tribute to Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson from The Selecter who has died.

Pete said Gaps, who he knew so well, would be missed by all knew him.

“As a front man of The Selecter he was electrifying, as a human being he was extraordinary, no one could ever fathom out the dichotomy of the crazy sweat soaked Rude boy on stage and the perfect often subdued gentleman off it.

“That was Gaps, don’t try to fathom it out just enjoy him, and that’s what we did.

“He was the perfect male foil to Pauline Black.

“Bringing life to those songs that always meant so very much, his delivery was always spot on, punctuating perfectly Pauline’s often acerbic delivery.

“Now he has gone, his music remains along with his grace and his kindness, there will be forevermore a Gaps shaped hole in our lives that couldn’t possibly be filled by anyone else. RIP.”

Gaps’ family said they were saddened to announce his death which happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Coventry – his home city.

“Gappa was actively performing with the group until he was diagnosed with cancer last year.

“Even then, he fought his way back from ill health to join Jools Holland’s RnB Orchestra as a guest artist for their 2023 autumn/winter tour.”

Gaps was known the world over for singing the title track on The Selecter’s debut album ‘Too Much Pressure’, he brought a captivating angst and frustration to the track as he described the trials and tribulations of daily life for the working man.

“He will be sorely missed by all those who knew him.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
