Two Coventry men arrested on suspicion of drink driving

TWO Coventry men have been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after concerning new statistics lead police to urge drivers not to get behind the wheel under the influence.

New Department for Transport statistics released on July 27 shows the number of people killed in drink-drive collisions in 2021 reached a 12-year high.

A 24-year-old man was arrested at 3.06am on August 12 on suspicion of drunk driving on Dalehouse Lane, Kenilworth when his Mercedes C200 was stopped by officers.

The man failed a roadside breath test and was later charged.

He will appear at Warwickshire Magistrates Court on 1 September.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the same offence at 4.20am on the same day on Kenilworth Road in Leamington Spa when his Vauxhall Astra was stopped by officers due to a minor traffic violation.

He too failed a roadside breath test, was charged and is due to appear at Warwickshire Magistrates Court on September 15.

In 2021, between 240 and 280 people were killed in drink-drive collisions.

In Warwickshire, 20 people were killed or seriously injured in collisions where the driver was impaired by alcohol that year,  while speeding was also a factor in eight of these incidents.

Sgt Simon Dalby said: “The warmer summer evenings are perfect for BBQs, nights out and pub meals, but please remember drunk driving is illegal and puts lives at risk.

“If you are driving, it’s best not to drink at all.”

Officers will be speaking to drivers about the dangers of drunk and drug driving and if needed refer them to drug and alcohol support services for help and advice.
