Two upcoming open days at Coventry’s historic Charterhouse as the search for volunteers begins

COVENTRY’S iconic Charterhouse is holding two open days over the next month as it looks for volunteers to help celebrate its rich history.

The Grade I listed building, which has undergone a £10million refurbishment, is hosting the events on Saturday, January 14 and February 11.

They are searching for volunteers aged over 18 to help at regular open days and special events throughout the year at the 14th Century building.

Volunteers will also have the chance to get involved in gardening or conservation in Heritage Park.

The restoration, which was conducted by Historic Coventry Trust alongside Coventry City Council, saw the refurbishment of medieval and Tudor wall paintings along with the gardens.

It is also the only Carthusian monastery in the country with intact interiors.

New attractions at the iconic building include interactive displays charting the site’s long history, starting with its founding by King Richard II in 1385.

Hannah Jones, General Manager at Charterhouse, said: “Now beautifully restored, Charterhouse is ready to welcome visitors and tell its stories.

“We are hoping to attract a diverse range of people to form our volunteer team so that it is representative of Coventry’s population.”

Elizabeth Bayton, a volunteer with Historic Coventry Trust, added: “I love Charterhouse, and I want everyone else to love it too.

“Being involved in this unique building gives you a sense of pride in our city and its amazing history.”
