TWO healthcare scientists from University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust are celebrating after receiving awards.

Respiratory physiologist Trish Matharu and assistant physiologist Gemma Cramp were both recognised by the Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) for achievements in their professional exams at a conference in Belfast last month.

It was an extra special ceremony for Gemma, who was presented with a second award – Best ARTP Associate Practitioner 2016 – for getting the best mark in the Associate Practitioner exam.

The Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Department diagnose and treat patients from across Coventry and Warwickshire, with a wide range of breathing and sleep disorders including asthma, emphysema and sleep apnoea.

Joanna Shakespeare, head of respiratory physiology and sleep, said: “I’m really proud of Trish and Gemma, they have worked exceptionally hard preparing for their exams and thoroughly deserve their success.

“It’s a really exciting time for the department.

“Early last year we gained prestigious Improving Quality In Physiological Services (IQIPS) accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians – and this year work will start on a new £169,000 dedicated sleep unit at the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby.”
