COVENTRY University is set to become part of the council’s planned City Centre Cultural Gateway (CCCG) in the former IKEA building.
The university would create a cultural hub on floors five and six which would see teaching areas, research space and attractions.
The area would also house a gallery, cafe, library and exhibition space, dance studio, conference area, artists’ studios, post-production filming facilities and a shop where students can sell their artwork.
It will act as a new home for the university’s FabLab which will support Coventry people and businesses to learn new skills.
Many of the facilities would be open to the public and available to hire.
If plans are approved, the cultural gateway could open by autumn 2025.
It is hoped the cultural gateway will serve as a lasting legacy of Coventry’s year as the UK City of Culture.
Coventry University’s vice-Chancellor Prof John Latham CBE said: “We are thrilled to be playing a key role in this project which aims to breathe new life into one of Coventry’s most prominent buildings.
“The cultural hub would bring great benefits to both students and the public by making cultural activities and experiences accessible to all.”
A public exhibition about plans for the building took place last month.
