THE University of Warwick is gearing up to host a prestigious international youth sporting event from August 11 to 16.

As well as hosting competitors at its campus hospitality venues, Warwick Conferences, the Sports and Wellness Hub, on the University of Warwick campus, will be one of the host venues for the International Children’s Games – with some of its athletes due to take centre stage.

Held every year, the International Children’s Games, co-hosted in partnership with Coventry City Council, Coventry University and CV Life, is an International Olympic Committee-sanctioned event where children from around the world aged 12 to 15 can showcase their skills.

This year, the disciplines on show include, basketball, swimming, athletics, football, climbing, table tennis and tennis – the latter five being hosted on the University of Warwick campus.

The Games will also be an opportunity for the Hub to get behind homegrown athletes, as eight children from its very own climbing centre – and three from the Tennis Centre’s local squad – are due to compete for a medal in their respective disciplines.

Alan Jephcott, Climbing Centre Manager, said: “We’re incredibly excited to host the International Children’s Games’ climbing event here – even more so when we have eight local children to root for!

“They’ve all worked incredibly hard to secure a place, so we’re really hopeful they’ll bring home a medal or two – as well as having a great experience competing. Good luck everyone!”

Louise Davies, Head of Operations at the Sports and Wellness Hub, added: “Warwick has a fantastic array of residential, conferencing and sports facilities, including our world-class Sports and Wellness Hub, that is ready to welcome the best young sporting talent from cities across the world.

“More importantly, these events are a fantastic opportunity to promote sports among the younger generation and showcase all the ways they can get active.

“Whether it’s team sports, such as basketball and football, or individual disciplines like climbing and tennis, there’s absolutely something for everyone – and we hope many will be inspired to take up a sport.

“This is set to be an incredibly exciting week, and we hope to welcome as many visitors as possible to cheer on our local athletes.”
