COVENTRY Transport Museum was taken over by the University of Warwick last week when 100 young students from 10 city schools were welcomed to the venue to learn more about local history.

Year eight students from across the city descended on the museum to enjoy interactive entertainment based on Coventry’s automotive history.

Children from disadvantaged backgrounds were selected to take part in the takeover.

Youngsters had the chance to delve into topics including robots, battery manufacturing and solar-powered transport.

At the Fluid Dynamics exhibit, youngsters were shown how engineers made aeroplanes fly using maths, different wing sections and a dog hairdryer.

And the university’s academics answered any questions the children had about the exhibitions and topics discussed.

The takeover is part of the university’s aim to encourage children from disadvantaged backgrounds to engage with higher education and new approaches to learning.

The Dean of the university’s WMG department, Prof Robin Clark, said the takeover was the perfect opportunity for children to connect with the city’s history.

Dr Karen Kudar, who runs the Fluid Dynamics exhibit, added: “I’m thrilled to be a part of such an exciting project.

“By welcoming children from widening participation schools, we were able to challenge ourselves as experts and work to get future generations of students excited about our subjects.”
