Update on Coventry Central Baths future 'could come soon'

AN UPDATE on the future of Coventry Central Baths and Elephant Building could be made ‘within the next few weeks’ according to city councillor Jim O’Boyle.

The Grade II listed building has been closed since February 2020 with developers Rainer Developments Ltd working on plans to bring it back into use.

Coun O’Boyle, the city council cabinet member for jobs, regeneration and climate change, told the Observer in April he hoped an announcement on the building could be made soon.

However, he has since said plans were still being developed by Rainer but said he hoped an announcement could be made in the next few weeks.

He added if it was not for the Covid pandemic the situation would have progressed quicker.

In 2019 the city council’s cabinet agreed to decommission and close Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre once The Wave was open and to dispose of the site.

The council entered into an exclusivity agreement with Rainier Developments Ltd in February 2020, weeks before the swimming baths closed for good.

This exclusivity agreement meant Rainer had to bring forward a delivery strategy for an ‘acceptable development.’

In August 2020, the Coventry Citizens Party started a petition about transforming the Elephant Building into an arts and exhibition centre.
