Uplifting civil rights musical 'To the Streets' coming to Coventry

A SPECIAL performance of the uplifting new musical ‘To The Streets’ will be coming to the University of Warwick’s Windmill Hill as part of the Birmingham 2022 Festival.

The new musical is a collaboration between China Plate and the Birmingham Hippodrome.

Tim Sutton and Roy Williams bring the new musical to life, which is inspired by the 1963 Bristol Bus Boycott, a pivotal moment in the UK’s civil rights history.

At the time, tensions were running high as the Omnibus Company was refusing to employ black or Asian drivers or bus conductors.

The play follows the story of idealistic youth worker Phil Stephenson, who takes to the streets to stand up for equality in Bristol.

Meanwhile Lorraine, who recently arrived from Jamaica, finds her voice through joining the historical movement.

The concert will be packed full of music including ska, calypso and rock ‘n’ roll.

China Plate director Paul Warwick said: “We can’t wait to take this special production across the West Midlands this summer.

“The concert performances will be presented within a festival style experience with additional performances and music to be announced.”
