THIS video (above) shows the moment when police dog – PD Gunner – chased down a suspect in Coventry.
The man had been cuffed by officers during a street arrest but still thought it would be a good idea to make a break for it.
Someone had dialled 999, reporting three men getting out of a van wearing gloves and carrying crowbars.
Six-year-old PD Gunner, who has Sgt John Simpson as his handler, made light work of chasing down and detaining the 25-year-old. He was found in possession of the van keys, was taken to hospital for treatment for a dog bite but was not seriously hurt. All three men – the others aged 24 and 28 – were arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. They have been released under investigation while officers conduct more enquiries.
Police also found two crowbars and a machete on the driver’s seat.
Like most of the West Midlands Police dogs, Gunner was born into our breed scheme and trained in-house by specialist dog trainers before hitting the streets of the West Midlands to protect the public.
