Coventry Editorial 31st Aug, 2023   0

HISTORIC gems in Coventry and places in the city not usually open to the public can be viewed next week when Heritage Open Days return between September 8 and 17.

New venues include Daimler Powerhouse, home to a number of the city’s artists and creatives, and the University of Warwick’s Modern Records Centre.

Musical performances will also take place across the open day period at the newly re-built Coventry Cross.

Holy Trinity Church, which houses the famed Doom painting, St John the Baptist Church in Fleet Street and the city’s Greek Orthodox Church will also be open, as will Coventry Cathedral.

On Saturday, September 9, Coventry Railway Station will hold a community day from 10am, with activities ranging from crafts to discovering hidden local history.

Coventry Transport Museum will hold its Heritage Day and Vintage Fair from 10am the same day, where people can search for vintage clothing and retro accessories and enjoy refreshments.

From 11am on Sunday, September 10, at the transport museum, people can explore the story of the British-designed and built World Land Speed Record car at the Thrust 2 tour and talk.

Dame Goodyvers Daye will get under way at 12.30pm on September 10 with a procession from the Godiva statue in the city centre followed by a 15th-century feast in the Priory Gardens.

From 11am the same day there will be the Cov Big Bike Ride from Broadgate to Charterhouse, with the route passing heritage venues across the city.

Coventry’s Carthusian monastery Charterhouse will be a new addition to the open days schedule, with visitors able to have a guided tour to learn about the building’s history.

And Drapers’ Hall will be open for walking tours with the Coventry History Society from 11am on Sunday, September 17.
