Volunteers helping to maintain Keresley Jubilee Wood

VOLUNTEERS were out in full force on Saturday during the fourth Keresley Jubilee Wood community action day.

The maintenance event, organised by Coun Matthew Dille alongside other Keresley Parish Councillors saw 11 volunteers go down to the wood to help maintain it.

Maintenance work included litter picking, fly-tipping and bramble removals, tree crowning and pruning.

Volunteers also started to straighten a lopsided fruit tree with a prop.

The parish council is collaborating with Coventry City Council’s Park Rangers who provided equipment such as tools, gloves and goggles, guidance and drinks for volunteers.

The action days first started last year with Coventry Park Rangers, local schools, scout groups and volunteers undertaking various sessions to rejuvenate the green space.

The three-hectare wood in Watery Lane was created to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012 with last year’s run of action days planned to return the area to its former glory for June’s Platinum Jubilee.

Previous work included grass-cutting, litter-picking and the installation of new benches.

Coun Dille said: “We know lots of people use and enjoy Keresley Jubilee Wood and it needs your help to keep it looking as beautiful as it does.

“We’re hoping to be able to schedule more events with Coventry Park Rangers in the not-too-distant future where we will be looking for more local volunteers.

“Please do let us know if you would be interested in taking part and we encourage everyone to visit and enjoy the wood, check out the progress and let us know what you think.”

Anyone interested in volunteering during future action days should email [email protected] for more information.
