STAFF from West Midlands Fire Service have been part of the United Kingdom International Search and Rescue (UKISAR) response in Malawi helping clear up the devastation caused by the cyclone which swept the country.

The request for UK assistance from the Malawi government came after it declared a state of disaster in 10 southern districts following the arrival of Storm Freddy.

The volunteer members of UK ISAR were joined by dedicated medical teams who volunteer from UK organisations outside of their fire and rescue service work.

WMFS sent 27 members and this latest deployment comes just a month after 77 arrived back in the UK from earthquake-hit Türkiye.

Wayne Brown, WMFS’ Chief Fire Officer, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating cyclones that have swept across several countries.

“As always, we are extremely grateful to them for answering the call and they will receive all necessary support during their deployment.”

The team’s own health and wellbeing will also be focused on when they return having been involved in two deployments.
