West Midlands Fire Service praised for 'first rate performance'

Coventry Editorial 7th Feb, 2023   0

WEST MIDLANDS Fire Service (WMFS) has been praised for its ‘first rate performance’ by inspectors.

His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) gave the service three outstanding ratings – a boost since its last inspection in 2019.

Insp Wendy Williams, congratulated WMFS on its first-rate performance in keeping people safe and secure from fires and other risks.

She said: “There are many positive findings from this inspection, and we found that all areas for improvements identified in our last inspection have been addressed.

“But the service can still make further improvements, such as in the way it assures itself of the competence of its workforce.”

She added WMFS had addressed areas for improvement to ensure it looked after its people better and it continued to make sure it used its resources well and provided value for money.

The report highlights improvements in WMFS’ promotion of the right values and culture, managing performance and developing leaders – all now assessed as ‘good’, demonstrating progress from the previous inspection.

Chief Fire Officer Wayne Brown said the three ‘outstanding’ HMICFRS assessments from were testament to WMFS staff’s hard work and their dedication to making communities safer, stronger and healthier.

“We are delighted to remain outstanding in our response to fire and other emergencies, and to receive the same assessment for our understanding of fire and other risks.

“Knowing where fires and other emergencies are most likely to happen means we can plan and allocate our staff and resources accordingly.

“Our improvements in values, culture and development are key to supporting our staff.

“The better they’re cared for, the better they can keep our communities safe.

“Our continued improvement stems from their diligence and innovation.”

He thanked and praised everyone at WMFS and added: “We’ve worked exceptionally hard to achieve this recognition from our national inspectorate and do not take it for granted.

“We have set ourselves incredibly high standards.

“Our challenge now is to continue to meet and exceed them.”
