WEST MIDLANDS business leaders joined Mayor Andy Street at the University of Warwick to discuss how the region’s transition to net-zero could contribute to tackling the cost-of-living crisis.

The event was hosted at the university’s business accelerator hub in collaboration with NatWest and brought together members of the Sustainable Homes and Buildings Coalition.

NatWest launched the coalition last year and brings together organisations from different sectors to discuss key issues to meet net zero, including reducing carbon emissions from homes and buildings.

The event explored collaborative approaches to improve energy efficiency in the region’s homes and buildings, with the group discussing the benefits of taking a consumer-centric approach to the issue.

The West Midlands Combined Authority aims to become net-zero by 2041, including transitioning into more environmentally friendly homes and transport.

The group, which included representatives from NatWest, British Gas, Worcester Bosch and Shelter and the University of Warwick, agreed that local collaboration is key to meeting their targets.

Visitors also heard about the innovative clean transport solutions being developed by local entrepreneurs based in the Accelerator Hub.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: “The current energy price crisis means we must change our policy and approach to energy.

“The work of the coalition, and their drive to put energy efficiency on the agenda to address the current energy crisis is exciting, as I believe this agenda is of critical importance to not only our short-term concerns but our longer-term energy security.”
