THE RSPCA has led a rescue operation to save wildlife in Nuneaton after an oil spill, written by Amiee Morley.
The incident happened at Bermuda Lake on Wednesday night (May 15) , impacting the resident water birds.
Goslings, a very young coot and an adult goose were among the birds rescued.
The injured animals have been taken to Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich, Cheshire.
Lee Stewart, manager of Stapeley Grange, said: “We’ve been thoroughly washing the oil off these first three little goslings and we’re happy to report that they are all now cleaned up.
“If oil is not removed from waterbirds it reduces the natural waterproofing in their plumage, leaving them at risk of dying from hypothermia.
“It is vital that they are treated as soon as possible.”
RSPCA Inspector Nicola Johnson said she was concerned for the wildlife in and around the lake and had a stark warning for local pet owners and dog walkers.
“We would also like to remind people that while the lake is still contaminated so badly, dogs should be kept away from the water”
