Woman who first delivered UK City of Culture programme to visit Coventry

THE FIRST person to deliver a UK City of Culture programme is coming to Coventry to give the city some crucial tips and advice ahead of their 2021 bid.

Shona McCarthy was chief executive of the Culture Company 2013 that delivered Derry-Londonderry’s City of Culture – and set the benchmark for other cities to follow.

Ms McCarthy, now a consultant on arts and culture, established the company and managed a budget of more than £20million to oversee the project – delivering a world-class programme of events throughout the year.

She will be speaking at a free event at The Box in Fargo Village to tell members of the public, and those involved within the art and culture in the city, how Derry-Londonderry achieved its success in the inagural 2013 accolade.

The talk will take place on Thursday (November 19) between 2pm and 3.30pm and is open to everyone – subject to availability.

David Burbidge, chair of Coventry’s UK City of Culture 2021 bid, said: “We are delighted that Shona McCarthy will be joining us for the afternoon event at The Box at Fargo.

“She is the only person in the country who has delivered a UK City of Culture year so to be able to benefit from her insight is fantastic for Coventry.

“We are expecting people with a keen interest in culture to come along but also those members of the public just interested in the bid and what it will mean to the city.

“It will be a chance, also, for the bid steering group to update the public on what stage we are at and we are hopeful of a strong turnout.”

There are no tickets to attend these events, they are free and open to everyone.
