WOMEN aged 16 and over who enjoy singing have the chance of joining the award-winning Coventry choir The Belles of Three Spires at a special one-day workshop next month.

The Belles’ A Cappella Experience, will take place from 10am to 4pm on May 7 at Whitley Academy, Coventry.

Participants will work with members of the choir and learn how to sing in four-part harmony.

During the session they will be able to discover their vocal range and they can take their place within the full Belles choir to learn a new song.

Participants can learn about the craft of singing, how to use warm-ups to keep voices healthy and will end the afternoon with the chance of performing with the choir in a mini-show.

Director Lucy Guess said: “Singing has instant benefits to your physical and emotional wellbeing.

“It instantly releases endorphins, the ‘feel-good hormone’, making you feel energised and uplifted.

“Deep breathing in singing, like in mediation, helps to decrease stress, relax muscles, lower blood pressure and even improve digestion.

“Using your voice enables your body to take in more oxygen than many sports.”

The age of the Belles ranges from singers in their early 20s to their 80s and research shows being part of the choir helps people keep mentally alert and improve their concentration and memory.

The choir is also very social, helping people meet new friends and feel a sense of community with shared goals.

Lucy added: “Beginners are welcome – if you can sing Happy Birthday you can come and join in.”

Belles’ chairperson Sue Seddon said attended the Belles’ Diva for a Day in 2014 and was ‘hooked straight away’.

“Everyone was so friendly yet dedicated to their craft and it was clear how much they all loved singing together.”

She was impressed by the variety of different styles of music performed and professionalism.

“Eight years on I have the honour of being the choir’s chairperson and I still love singing A Capella with the Belles.”

Admission to the event is just £5 and booking is essential.
