WORK has begun on 83 new affordable homes in Canley.

Two old blocks of flats on Donegal close will be demolished to make way for a new £10million development on land off Pappenham Green.

The development, being built by Whitefriars Housing, is the first to be built by the company in Coventry that will include a mix of homes for affordable rent, shared ownership and private sale.

Simon Kimberley, Deputy Chief Executive at Whitefriars Housing, said: “This significant investment in Canley will change the landscape of the local area and is a real milestone in the area’s ongoing regeneration.

“We are committed to providing more affordable housing in and around Coventry to ensure it is a place where people are proud to live and work, now and into the future.”

The development will include 48 homes for affordable rent – a mix of houses and flats with one to four bedrooms – plus 14 homes for shared ownership and 21 two and three-bedroom houses for outright sale.

Craig Tatton, chief operating officer at contractor Bouygues UK, added: “We are pleased to be delivering these home for the residents of Canley and the surrounding areas.

“We are providing new homes for over 100 families in Coventry and with this we aim to bring training and employment opportunities through our National Skills Academy for Construction, working in partnership with local training providers and our supply chain.”

The homes are expected to be complete by summer 2018.

Welcoming the news, Coun Linda Bigham, cabinet member for community development, said: “It’s fantastic to see that there will soon be new homes available, especially with the range of options available to people.

“It will really make a difference to the city and the Canley area.”
