Youngsters given scrum-thing to smile about after visit from Coventry rugby legends

YOUNGSTERS at Acorns Children’s Hospice were given scrum-thing to smile about when Coventry Rugby Club legends Sam McNulty and Richard Meacham paid them a special visit last week.

Excited youngsters tried out some rugby skills, learning from the professionals before enjoying a chat and games with them.

The sports stars joined teenagers from the charity’s new ‘young people’s group’, a support service for those with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

This new service offers one-to-one sessions and weekend breaks for those aged between ten and 18 years old.

Acorns Birmingham’s young person worker Rachel Paynter said: “Everyone was so excited to meet the team and the players were absolutely brilliant with our young people taking them out into the gardens to share their skills.

“A lot of our young people can be socially isolated because of their needs so for them to be able to come and access group hang-outs and overnight stays with their peers is huge.

“Today’s amazing visit will be remembered by everyone.”

Acorns provides specialist palliative care for over 700 life-limited and life-threatened children and support for nearly 1,000 families from its three hospices in Walsall, Birmingham and Worcester.

It costs the charity £27,000 a day to provide its lifeline care and support, with most of the cash coming through fund-raising and donations.
