Battle at the top ends in a draw for Alvis Sporting

FOOTBALL: THE BATTLE at the top of the Midland League Division Two between Droitwich Spa and Alvis Sporting ended in a 1-1 draw on Easter Monday.

Droitwich needed one point to ensure a promotion place in their last game of the season, duly delivered deep into injury time with an equalising goal.

However, the point which Alvis gained still keeps them well on course for promotion needing a maximum of ten points from their remaining six games.

Whilst the hosts dominated the game in the opening stages, it was Alvis who went in front on 40 minutes when they broke down the right and Dildale Linton neatly held the ball up for Carrie Powell to score his first goal of the season with a low drive into the corner of the net.

After the break, Alvis were in the ascendancy for long periods with the pace of Daniel Pidgeon causing problems, and with 20 minutes remaining, he combined well with Rickie Cutting whose left foot shot went inches wide.

However, Droitwich equalised three minutes into added on time when a deep cross was headed on, and James Lemon netted the priceless promotion goal from close range.

Damian Cassidy, the Alvis manager, said “Whilst we did not start brightly we had a great second half, and I thought that Adam Day was outstanding. The point gained keeps us right in the promotion picture.”
