Bears Women's side seal promotion in final weekend of Division 3 action

WARWICKSHIRE Bears Women’s Wheelchair Basketball side secured promotion to Division 2 in the final round of fixtures at the weekend, after clinching the runners-up spot in Division 3.

Head coach Dan Smith was delighted by the efforts of his side to clinch promotion, and could do little to hide his pride.

“I’m so proud of all the girls associated with the Bears Women’s team.

“Finishing this season second in the league and gaining promotion, what an achievement – I couldn’t be prouder.

“It has been a true pleasure being their coach and I look forward for the opportunity to coach the team next season.”

The opening game on Saturday proved to be a title decider, as the Bears lost out to the only side to beat them all season – the Wakefield Whirlwinds.

Scoring the first points of the afternoon, Bears entered into a first-quarter lead prior to being subject to a Whirlwinds fightback before the break.

Wakefield never relinquished their advantage from there, and continued in the second-half with the same drive to go 20 points up heading into the final-quarter.

Bears threw all they could at the visitors to narrow the deficit to nine, but it did not prove enough as Whirlwinds set themselves up for an eventual title win.

Sunday was opened with a victory in the first of two fixtures on the day, as the Bears tore apart the Jaguars 49-26;

A stunning display by the Bears enabled them to dominate the game and impose themselves upon the visitors, who had no answer to the waves of Warwickshire attacks.

The final fixture of the day and the season against the third-placed Eastern Blue Stars was a game in which the victors would seal promotion to Division 2.

Fortunately for Bears, they were able to edge the contest 34-26 to take themselves up to the next tier for the 2019/20 season.

Remaining resilient in defence, the Bears established an early lead and never looked back, ensuring their place in the second division.

The next Bears side in action is the men’s second team, who face the seventh-placed Sparrows in NL Second Division on Saturday, with hopes of the title very much still on for Daz Peasley’s side.

The Bears are still looking for additional sponsors to help the club in their endeavors to provide sporting opportunities for local disabled people.

Additionally, the club always welcome new players, especially female and juniors members.
