NETBALL: PUPILS at a Coventry school have received a masterclass from a member of the Wasps Netball Super League team, as the popularity of the sport soars.

Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School welcomed Wasps Netball Centre Bongiwe Msomi to give a coaching session in the sport.

A total of 53 pupils from Years 7 to 10 took part in the session which focused on developing game techniques, before these were put into practice in mini games.

Cardinal Wiseman, which is part of the Romero Academy, has seen a dramatic increase in the popularity of netball – with the school forming eight new teams in just two years.

The players compete in the junior section of the Coventry and Warwickshire Netball League, going up against other schools from across the area.

This was the first time the school has welcomed an elite level netball player to host a coaching session.

South African international Bongiwe said: “It was amazing to visit Cardinal Wiseman. I love working with young people and the girls really appreciated us coming down to help them improve and further develop their skills.

“It was great to see them all so excited.

“We take time out of our busy schedules to do this so it’s nice to see how inspired they are and be part of their growth as netball players.

“I’m glad to be involved in the school coaching sessions, it means that we can target young people with the freshest information and educate them about the latest developments in Netball.

“We’re showing people that netball is fun – there’s lots going on and the sport is really moving forwards.”

Charlotte Chinn, teacher of Physical Education at Cardinal Wiseman Catholic School, said that it was excellent for the girls to learn new skills from an international player.

“This is the first time we’ve had anyone external in our school to coach netball, and the girls really enjoyed it,” she said.

“We have seen a huge increase in participation in netball and it’s now our most popular sport for girls.

“They learnt a lot of new skills and techniques during the session and we will be putting them into practice going forward.”
