THE FUTURE is bright for Charley Gregory after the Coventry youngster took the Under-12s title at the Nike Junior National Tennis Championships.
Gregory defeated Toby Samuel from Ringwood 1-6 6-3 6-2 in the final at the West Hants Tennis Centre in Bournemouth last Friday to claim the title.
Speaking after his win Gregory said: “I’m really pleased with my performance.
“Toby had the 1st set with good fighting quality, but I used the crowd to persevere and in the 2nd and 3rd sets, the momentum was with me.
“It was really important to start the 3rd set off well in the first 15-20 minutes and get to 5-3 instead of 4-4. Now I’ll go into 14U and train to go against people who are taller, stronger and hit harder.”
The Championships are the highest level competition for all juniors and with more than 250 players scross four age groups taking part it is a showcase for British tennis and the best junior talent in the country.
Having run for over 100 years, the tournament has an illustrious line of past winners including Andy Murray, Heather Watson, Tim Henman, Elena Baltacha, and Anne Keothavong.
