FOOTBALL: COVENTRY Alvis start their Midland Football League Division Two campaign this weekend when they travel to Stafford Town.

The club – which recently changed name from Alvis Coventry – will this season play in the FA Vase for the first time.

Manager Damian Cassidy said: “I am looking forward to the new season and playing against several well known town sides on the non-league circuit.

“Should we defeat Boldmere St Michaels in the opening round of the FA Vase, we could face Worcester City which would be an exciting opportunity for the club.

“There is little doubt that we will be facing clubs of a higher standard than before.

“Hopefully we can take advantage of this and increase support from the local area.”

Coventry United

A HOME tie will kick-start Coventry United’s season this weekend as they face Rugby Town in the FA Cup.

Town, who last season were relegated to the fifth tier of the non-league pyramid, have experience a successful pre-season and are expected to provide United with a stiff opening task.

United’s squad includes six former Rugby Town players from the previous two seasons, including Kevin Thornton, Mitchell Piggon, Lewis Rankin, Tom Glasscoe, Aron Wint and Lewis Hudson.

Saturday’s game at the Butts Park Arena kicks off at 3pm.

Should the game end in a draw, the replay will take place at Butlin Road on Tuesday, August 8, evening at 7.45pm.
