A day to remember for sidecar speedway family the Cossars at Brandon

SIDECAR SPEEDWAY: IT WAS a meeting to remember for the Cossar family at Coventry’s Brandon stadium last Friday at a meeting that was full of spectacular crashes, blown engines and even a fire.

Mark Cossar was runner-up in the 1000cc event to Gareth Winterburn, but only after four totally pulsating laps of non-stop action.

Cossar had the crowd on their feet as he powered through from third into second and then squeezed into the lead with a daring outside move, only for Gareth Winterburn to later re-pass him on the inside.

Despite his grasstrack bike not liking the less grippy conditions, Tom Cossar (Mark’s younger brother) still made it through to the semi-final, and there was a sterling performance by Andy Cossar (Mark & Tom’s Dad), who with passenger Gaz Williams (from Rugby), also made it into the semi-finals.

However, there was still a victory to savour for the bike-mad family as Jeni Cossar (Mark & Tom’s sister) won the 500cc class. Riding as passenger to Scott Dunn, the duo raced to a splendid unbeaten five-ride maximum.

Empire Classic Results:

1000cc

1st Gareth Winterburn & Liam Brown

2nd Mark Cossar & Carl Blyth

3rd Will Offen & Jordan Smith

500cc

1st Scott Dunn & Jeni Cossar

2nd Aaron Vale & Stephen Vale

3rd James Hogg & Danny Hogg
