Droobers return to the woods with COVID-safe Itchington Holt event

OCTAVIAN Droobers orienteers were back in action after staging their first post-lockdown event at Itchington Holt last weekend.

Droobers club members were subjected to COVID-19 guidelines throughout the course of the event, but were no doubt grateful for the opportunity to navigate and venture through the woods once again.

Three courses were contested – Short, Medium and Long – with Sue Hallett (W70) the winner of the former course, finishing in a time of 40:31.

Liz Phillips (W55) was first on the Medium course in 37:12, while Will Gardner (M21) won the Long course in 27:27, narrowly beating Nathan Lawson (M21, 27:38) and Duncan Birtwistle (M21, 31:24) in second and third place respectively.

Looking forward, the club is planning more events – with entry limited to Octavian Droobers club members.

However, there are many opportunities for the general public to experience this adventure sport at the many Country Parks in the local area – with trails of varying lengths from 1- 6km, called Permanent Orienteering Courses (POCs), being introduced in ten locations around Coventry, Warwickshire and Daventry, Northamptonshire.

For a full list of these venues, and for access to download maps for the courses, head to the Droobers’ club website at www.octavian-droobers.org, or head to a page for newcomers to the sport at www.britishorienteering.org.uk/poc
