Elite League title dreams all over for Coventry following Wednesfield loss

ELITE LEAGUE title contenders Wednesfield Aces pulled off a 23 point victory over Coventry on Sunday to quash any chances the Sabres had of pulling off a late challenge for the championship.

The Sabres entered the meeting on the back of their third Elite League win of the season over Poole – leaving their title chances hanging by a thread with results having to go their way elsewhere in order for a look-in at the title.

However any such miracles were denied as the Wolverhampton-based outfit raced to a 110-87 victory.

A sizable crowd watched the Aces take a step closer to Elite League glory, and they signaled their intent early on with three race advantages in the opening five heats.

The visitors quickly pulled further clear and by heat six Coventry claimed the inside grid positions as they were ten points behind.

Two unfortunate falls for veteran racer Ray Oliver, both when Coventry were in a commanding position, did little to help the home side’s chances as Wednesfield added to their points tally – leading 100-77 after 18 heats.

One positive point for the Sabres however was the performance of skipper Myke Grimes who clocked 23 points out of a possible 24 from his six rides – Chris Parish also shined with a 17 point haul.

Coventry team manager Lee Marsh said: “It’s been a tough season but we’ve won three out of seven Elite League matches – given this has been our debut campaign I’m very pleased with that.

“Our club is still young, five years ago we was only just starting our first race meetings, and now we’re in the top tier of the sport.

“It has been nice to give our youngsters the opportunity to race in the Elite League.”

Coventry have one remaining Elite League fixture left to complete – an away tie against Horspath Hammers, who are in a two-way battle for the title with Wednesfield.
