ICE HOCKEY: Fans’ favourite Liam Stewart will not return to the Skydome next season after Coventry Blaze confirmed his departure earlier this morning.
The 22-year-old made 57 appearances for Blaze throughout 2016/17 and contributed 11 goals and 11 assists throughout the campaign, which saw Blaze miss out on the end-of-season playoffs for the first time in the club’s history.
His arrival at the Skydome made national headlines due to his high-profile family relation – celebrity father and rockstar Rod Stewart.
Stewart joined Blaze after a short stint with Alaska Aces of the ECHL, followed up his EIHL campaign in Coventry by scoring twice to help Team GB win a gold medal at the World Championships in Belfast.
Head Coach Danny Stewart revealed the club has been in talks with Liam – but the club can only be expected to wait on the green light for so long.
He said: “Inevitably, other options have come our way which we weren’t prepared to miss out on.
“Therefore we have had to take the decision to wish Liam all the best in whatever he chooses to do.”
