Five potential free transfers for the Sky Blues

HUNDREDS of players with Premier League and Championship experience will be released as free agents this summer.

Out sports editor Steve Carpenter has picked out five players who could be on Steven Pressley’s wish list as he continues to bolster his squad ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

Anton Robinson

After impressing for the Sky Blues while on a short term loan deal from Huddersfield Town, many will be expecting Steven Pressley to make a move for the midfielder over the summer period.

Despite missing the final games of the season through injury, Robinson made an immediate impact with a series of solid displays in the Sky Blues midfield.

The 28-year-old was released by former Sky Blues boss Mark Robins last month and is likely to attract much interest from a host of League One clubs.

He would provide much-needed experience to Pressley’s young squad and would take no time in fitting into his hard-working regime and style of play.

David Prutton

Another player who is likely to be high on Pressley’s ‘wanted’ list after enjoying a short spell with the Sky Blues at the back end of last season.

Clearly a leader both on and off the pitch, his no nonsense attitude and determination in the heart of midfield could make him the perfect role model for the likes of Conor Thomas and Billy Daniels.

A move to the Sky Blues would suit Prutton who declared an interest in returning next season but his potentially high wage demands could prove to be a stumbling block.

Patrick McCourt

A highly skilful attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, McCourt could bring another attacking dimension to Pressley’s side.

The 30-year-old began his career at Rochdale but made a name for himself as a tidy, skilful midfielder while plying his trade in the Irish Leagues for Shamrock Rovers and Derry City.

At one point Liverpool were rumoured to be interested in the Northern Ireland international while at Celtic but he has since been released by Burnley and could make a step down to League One in order to gain more first team football.

Jermaine Johnson

Released by Sheffield Wednesday as the club’s most recent longest serving player, Johnson could be a target for Pressley as the wide-man he so desperately craves.

Pressley has been chasing a winger since his arrival and although Mark Marshall seems to fit the bill he has attracted interest from the Championship which could tempt the Scot to make a move for Johnson.

Although the Jamaican international is 33 he could be an option for Pressley on a short-term deal.

William ‘Billy’ Paynter

With Callum Wilson expected to stay this summer despite strong interest from a host of different clubs, Pressley could look to bring in Paynter who has the potential to be the perfect partner.

The 29-year-old has been released from Doncaster this summer and finished the 2013/14 campaign on loan at Sheffield United where he helped improve their fortunes on the pitch.

Unlikely to score many, Paynter is the type of striker that would be willing to do the so called ‘dirty work’ to compliment Wilson’s game and will have already become accustomed to life in League One
