FOOTBALL - Bidwell insists Coventry City must attack final five matches to secure play-off spot

JAKE Bidwell insists Coventry City must attack their final few games of the season if they to secure a play-off spot.

Bidwell scored his first goal in over a year in midweek as the Sky Blues lost 2-1 away at Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.

And the defender feels City must attack their remaining five league matches if they are to secure a second consecutive top-six finish.

Bidwell said: “We’re still well in it. We just need to attack these last few games with everything we’ve got.

“We need to be a lot better than we were against Southampton but we also bounce back from these games quickly. We need to do that on Saturday.

“We beat Leicester and Leeds and we’ve shown that we can compete with these top sides, but we just didn’t match those levels [against Saints].

“It took me until April to get my first goal which is disappointing for me personally but I’m glad that I now have now.”

With the game goalless, Haji Wright hit the crossbar after slipping when taking a 10th-minute penalty after Flynn Downes tripped Joel Latibeaudiere in the box.

And Saints made the most of that reprieve to take the lead on 18 minutes as Kyle Walker-Peters’ shot from distance deflected off the hand of Che Adams past a wrong-footed Bradley Collins.

Collins then made a fine save to tip David Brooks’ low shot around the post for a corner only for Saints to strike again on 38 minutes when Adams bundled the ball home from close range at a corner.

However, the Sky Blues halved the deficit on 68 minutes as Bidwell produced a cushioned volley at the back post from Fabio Tavares’ cross from the right.

Coventry are next in action away at Birmingham City on Saturday, April 13 with kick-off at 3pm at St Andrews.
