FOOTBALL - Brown on target again as Coventry Sphinx draw with Walsall Wood

LEO Brown scored his second goal in as many games as Coventry Sphinx came from behind to draw 1-1 with Walsall Wood.

Brown equalised for Sphinx shortly before half time after Joe Fitzpatrick opened the scoring for Walsall at the John Sylvester Stadium.

And the result means Coventry sit 17th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, two points above the relegation zone.

Sphinx went close to opening the scoring when Luke Downes’ superb dipping volley from 25-yards out clipped the crossbar on its way over.

However, Walsall took the lead on 27 minutes when Fitzpatrick controlled a loose clearance before firing a low effort out of the reach of Sphinx goalkeeper Keelan Fallows.

The visitors drew level at the end of the first half as Brown’s shot flicked up off a defender and looped over Walsall’s debutant goalkeeper Dale Eve.

And Sphinx almost completed the turnaround in first-half injury time as Matty Shipman’s effort flew inches past the angle of post and bar.

Sphinx stopper Fallows made a crucial fingertip save early in the second period before Walsall hit the bar with a header from close range from the resulting corner.

However, Sphinx almost clinched the points when Brown beat Eve to Jac Redhead’s through ball and held off the Walsall defenders only to fire a shot against the post.

Sphinx are next in action at home to Nuneaton Borough on Tuesday, November 14 in the Birmingham Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena..
