KYLE Carey scored a second-half brace as Coventry Sphinx claimed an impressive 3-1 derby win against 10-man Racing Club Warwick on Boxing Day.
Carey restored Coventry’s lead early in the second half after Harry Wakefield opened the scoring before later sealing the points from the penalty spot at Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
And the visitors also had Cameron Ebbutt sent off just past the hour mark, after committing the foul which led to the home side’s penalty.
The result means Coventry sit 18th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, five points clear of the relegation zone.
Sphinx deservedly took the lead on 24 minutes when Wakefield met Carey’s pass at the back post to score his first goal for the club.
However, the Racers drew level one minute after half time as Andre Williams produced a tidy finish past Charlie Woods into the bottom corner.
Coventry reclaimed the lead on 53 minutes when Carey beat the offside trap and finished through the legs of Sam Lomax from Callum Woodward’s through ball.
And Sphinx won a penalty three minutes later as Ebbutt blocked Jordan Hayward’s goalbound effort with his hand and the referee pointed to the spot.
Worse was to come for the visitors as Ebbutt received a second yellow card for the offence to leave Warwick down to 10-men for the remainder of the fixture.
And Carey duly dispatched the resulting penalty into the bottom right corner to secure the points.
Coventry are next in action against Bedworth United on Wednesday, January 1 with kick-off at 3pm at The Oval.
