COVENTRY City’s two-game winning run came to an end following a 2-1 defeat away at high-flying at Ipswich Town.
A late own goal from Brandon Williams proved only a consolation after first-half strikes from George Hirst and Wes Burns put the Tractor Boys in command at Portman Road.
And the result means Coventry sit 17th in the Sky Bet Championship table.
Ipswich took the lead after just six minutes when George Hirst latched onto Nathan Broadhead’s through ball before firing a low shot past Sky Blues goalkeeper Bradley Collins.
City went close to an equaliser soon after as Jake Bidwell unleashed a superb half volley from the edge of the penalty area, forcing Ipswich stopper Václav Hladký into an acrobatic save.
However, the home side doubled their lead on 41 minutes when Burns curled a stunning effort into the top left corner with the outside of his boot from just inside the penalty area.
The Sky Blues won a penalty on 73 minutes after substitute Tatsuhiro Sakamoto drew a foul in the box only for fellow sub Matty Godden to hit the crossbar from the spot.
City eventually reduced the deficit six minutes into injury time when Manchester United loanee Williams headed Ben Sheaf’s cross into his own net under pressure from Ellis Simms at the back post.
Coventry are next in action at home to Birmingham City on Friday, December 8 with kick-off at 8pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
