FOOTBALL - Coventry City boss Mark Robins wants his side to build on Watford performance

MARK Robins hopes his Coventry City side can build on their start to the season following a frustrating 1-1 draw at Watford last weekend.

The Sky Blues picked up their fifth point of the season from as many matches after Tom Dele-Bashiru cancelled out Ellis Simms’ early goal at Vicarage Road.

And while Robins admits his side have not made the best start to the season, he believes the return of key players Ben Sheaf and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto will make a big difference to his squad.

Robins said: “This is where its madness if we look and say we will be challenging at the top straightaway. This is something we need to build into and always have had to.

“Five points from five games, we know isn’t fantastic, but some of performances we’ve had have been good and that’s a positive in itself.

“When we can get Ben Sheaf, Tatsu and Rapha back in and there’s only a few of them out but they make a difference to our squad, regardless of if we have high depth to it this season.”

Reflecting on last weekend’s draw, Robins felt City missed a number of chances to put the game to bed after Simms opened the scoring.

Robins felt the Sky Blues deserved more than a point and praised his side’s ability to create chances throughout.

Robins added: “I’m frustrated. In the end we accept the point because we have to do but I think if you look at the first half performance, it was scintillating at times, I thought we were really good.

“We created opportunities and played really well, but we didn’t take them, apart from the first header, which is probably the most difficult chance.

“We had guilt edged chances to put the game to bed in the first half and when that happens you know that they’re still in the game.

“There are some absolutely unbelievable chances that we didn’t manage to take. If you’re being hypercritical then it should have been in. I can go through all the chances.

“But I’m being hypercritical, we’re creating these chances and looking dangerous, so I don’t want to be critical because we’ve put in a decent performance and sometimes you don’t get what you deserve and I don’t think we have done this season.”

Coventry are next in action against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, September 18 with kick-off at 8pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
